Tuning Out

{Co Writer- My son, Elijah}

It was in the middle of the night when I heard the sound. A single, high pitched “beep!” Everyone else was fast asleep, but not me. I rolled over on my other side, trying to go back to bed when I heard the noise again. It was the fire alarm, signaling the battery was dead.

Why does something like this happen in the middle of the night?! I thought to myself.

I started thinking I could tune out the noise and go back to bed. I really didn’t want to get up and change the batteries at 3 a.m. But of course, the noise kept me up and I eventually rolled out of bed to fix the problem.

This reminded me of the time we visited a friend’s house and heard the same noise. When we asked about it, they looked puzzled and said,

“What sound?”

They had gotten used to the noise and couldn’t hear it.

Has this ever happened to you? Maybe it’s a sin you don’t realize that’s destroying you. Or perhaps it’s your automatic angry reaction and you can’t recognize when you lose your temper.

(Elijah Edit: Sometimes we do bad stuff and think it won’t hurt us. We think it’s ok to do. People do drugs and get a habit of doing these bad things. Or it’s the negative stuff the devil tells you. Forget about that and be focused on God telling you the right thing to do.)

There is a way that seems right, but in the end it leads to death. (Proverbs 14:12 NIV)

In my life, it was my thought pattern. I had been thinking a certain way for years. It wasn’t until my therapist pointed out that this way of thinking was actually hurting me. I was doing this to protect myself from getting hurt but in reality, it was preventing me from trusting.

I had been thinking this way for so long, I didn’t even notice.

Or maybe you are feeling like my son did in his ~ 2 sizes too small shoes ~ thinking, “I’m fine!”

(Elijah Edit: I had gotten so used to my shoes, I didn’t realize they were too small. When my Mom asked if I wanted new shoes, I didn’t think I needed them. When she got me new shoes, I could move my toes again! No matter how crammed you feel, there is always room for God.)

No matter where you are in life, “There’s always room for God.”

God can transform your life, your thought patterns, your way of living!

Guide me on the road to eternal life. (Psalm 139:24 MSG)

This week I pray you take time to listen for any “noises” you might’ve missed or gotten used to. Ask God to search your heart and point out anything that is hindering you from growing closer to him.

Tune into your life.

You might be surprised how much better you feel with a few more inches to wiggle your toes. 😊
